Where does the time go?! Rhetorical question of course. I realized today that I have done a great job of downloading the pictures from my camera into the computer. Not such a good job of having them printed. I did start to take care of that, and I'm pleased to say that I'm all caught up. . . . to July! eek.
So October is almost over! This Friday is our homeschool's annual Harvest Party complete with costumes. Emily decided right away how she wanted to dress, as did Rebekah and Hannah. Johnny wasn't sure which way he would go, but I think we have a decision there as well. Unfortunately, both Rebekah and Hannah changed their minds. . . twice! Hannah now has enough costumes to dress up 3 times, and Rebekah twice.
Fortunately Jesse has gone right with the flow. I suggested a costume idea, and he seemed pleased. We went right out, bought fabric, came home and sewed it up with only a few complaints. We made minor fitting adjustments, and he was downright pleased with that costume. In fact, he wore it all over, and seemed pleased to show it off to his brother and sisters even! Now why can't they all be like that?
Pictures of these wonderful costumes are in order, but you'll have to wait. I haven't taken any pictures, and some of these people want to leave it a surprize until Friday. Let's hope I manage to get the pictures downloaded then, if not printed!

Field Trip!
We got to go to the Aquarium yesterday! To tell the truth, the kids really didn't want to go. Everyone had a great time though! Hannah made new friends. . . .

And so did Emily. . . .

And so did Emily. . . .

Rebekah touched some of the rays for the first time (after all those trips to Sea World!

The highlight for Johnny, was seeing the sharks, and then watching them be fed!

Jesse enjoyed feeding the pigeons, chasing the pigeons, as well as watching all the fish. He didn't want to be close to any of them though!
Now we're all looking forward to the next field trip!

life with a toddler
Ah the joys of life with a toddler! You never know what will happen next, and often wonder what is going on in that little head. Jesse enjoys playing lots of games, and some are not as fun as others. He likes shutting doors. Unfortunately he doesn't always remember that he can't open them again. :::mental note::: keep bathroom doors shut at all times.
Fun questions we have asked recently include:
"where is my phone?"
"why is there a baseball in the toilet?" --my personal favorite
"where is Jesse" --this can be asked in a game, and literally, as the boy is very fast!
The phone question is sadly still unresolved. Okay, so we never figured out WHY the baseball was in the toilet, but I let that one go. John's phone has been missing for 5 days now. We can't call it, because well, we turned it off so Jesse could play with it and not call anyone. Unfortunately, we didn't watch where he went with said phone. On the up side, John has had a very peaceful week! Only ONE phone call at work! While he has enjoyed the peace, John would also like having the phone back. You would think with all the little bodies around here, someone would find it! We are all hoping it didn't go out with the trash. . . . . .

Another CVS Receipt

Have I mentioned I love a good deal? This is Emily with a receipt from a CVS trip this week. Most of it is coupons off my next order, and the "extracare bucks" they use to lure me back every time. This time around I bought 6 items, my total was in the 20 dollar range, but after coupons and the ever popular extracare bucks, I paid just 13c! Now that's an enjoyable shopping experience!

Royal Prestige
A couple of weeks ago, at the fair, I bought something. I never, ever buy anything in those shopping halls at the fair. We don't usually even spend much time in there, but this year it was hot. Really hot. We went in to enjoy the air conditioning. That was when it happened. The kids saw a guy demonstrating some pots and pans, and he was giving away little freebies, and samples. Well, who can say no to free trinkets and free food?! The food was good too, and dairy free! I was pretty interested myself, by that point!
When it was all over, I had bought a set of pots and pans. Not just any pots and pans though, Royal Prestige Cookware. Sounds empressive, no? Well it does when my 4 yr old says it. The very smart salesman gave the kids an instructional dvd showing all the benefits of the "Royal Prestige Healthy Cookware System". Of course we all watched it as soon as we got home. No kidding. By the next day, everyone had watched it, even John! And by then we couldn't wait for the stuff to arrive.
Fast forward to this past Monday. The UPS truck pulled up to the curb and we were all out the door almost before the poor guy could get out of his seat. We were waiting for him as he lugged all 70+ lbs of boxes up to the door. This was just one of the times I was glad to have lots of children--easy to get the stuff inside!
Fun was had by all that afternoon. . . . . some of us enjoyed the boxes, some enjoyed looking at all the cookware and all of us enjoyed eating the food we made!

My first dinner attempt was a little less than I had hoped. By the time we got all the stuff unpacked, washed and ran to the store for a couple things, it was time to make dinner, and I didn't have time to watch the dvd or read the books. . . . . . . the chicken and potatoes were fine, the veggies burned a little. My darling children said they were good, that they liked them burned!

Last night's dinner was much better. We had pork chops, rice, peas and carrots, cabbage and squash. All prepared in less than 40 minutes, from the time I stepped into the kitchen, until we sat down. ahhhh! Nothing burned, and there were compliments all around!
So far this stuff is a hit. We're trying out the slow cooker today, and everyone is already looking forward to it.
unfortunately, none of the pictures I took, want to load at this point. I'll try later!

vacuums
With five kids, a cat and a dog, rarely a day goes by that our vacuum cleaner is not in use. Usually if it wasn't used, we weren't home! When our last vacuum broke, I was so pleased with the new one. Well, pleased and a little freaked out at how much dirt it pulled up---we've been living in that??!!!
I was pleased with our new vacuum until the brush roller thingie had to be replaced about 6 weeks after we bought it. And then the belt too. Hmmmm. A few weeks later it wasn't working right again. I'm really good at taking the vacuum apart now though. For about 2 weeks it hasn't been working right. My Dad looked at it and tried to help fix it, I've taken it apart, cleaned it and put it back together NUMEROUS times, and still, it only works off and on.
This weekend we saw some new vacuums at Best Buy. Temptation at it's best. They all look so shiny and as if they will really work. How do you know if these things will last though? Do I buy a really expensive one and count on it being worth what I paid? Do I buy a cheapie one and then plan on replacing it soon? Ugh.
Today, I went to use the vacuum again, and AGAIN, the brush roller thingie isn't rolling. Took it apart AGAIN and the belt looked worn. On the outside chance it might help, I got out the spare belt and changed it. Wait a minute! As I pulled the old belt off, I noticed, it was about 3 inches LONGER than the new one! Checked serial numbers to make sure I had the right one, and lo and behold, it was the same. New belt goes on, and it is hard to put the brush roller thingie back in . . . . . just like it was when the machine was brand new (um, 4 months ago). Plug it back in and whaddayaknow, it works!
Oh my. I guess my future doesn't include a career as a vacuum mechanic, but at least my floors are clean again, and Best Buy doesn't have any more of our money!

An Everyday Hero
This week, while at the library for storytime, I picked up a copy of the "OC Parenting" magazine. They always have a huge pile laying out, and sometimes there are some interesting/fun family activities listed. As I was flipping through I found an article called "Everyday Heroes":
http://bluetoad.com/publication/?m=1905&l=1 it's page 30. . . . .
Whaddayaknow?! I always knew I was married to a hero, and now anyone else that reads this magazine does too.
Oh, and the librarian encouraged me to take a few copies. She slipped me a bag with about 20 or so! If you want one, let me know. Autographs are only a dollar : )
