Jesse's first ER visit

Not exactly an entry I had hoped to put in the baby book. Jesse had his first visit to the ER today, and not as a visitor. Just about lunch time, Jesse was playing with a maraca, enjoying that shak-y kind of noise he is fond of. John noticed that he had managed to crack it, and the tiny little beads from inside, were going in his mouth. Not a huge deal, except that they were little LEAD beads. Oh ugh.

After talking to poison control and the pediatrician, we were off to the ER. Ever tried to get an 11 month old to lie still? Under the best of circumstances, Jesse doesn't "lie still" unless he is asleep. Put him on the x-ray table, on top of a hard x-ray film, with a big machine overhead, in a strange room, lots of strange noises and Mommy wearing a strange lead apron, and well, he wasn't lying still. I'm happy to report that was the worst of it though.

The x-ray revealed that Jesse didn't swallow any of the little beads. The doc did want to know what the big round object was though. WHAT?!?! Well apparently our little guy didn't swallow any little beads, but did manage to swallow a dime.

So we are home safe and sound, have to follow up with his doctor early next week, and just keep an eye on him--and our loose change. The doc reassured us by saying that thousands of kids swallow coins every year, and probably the worst that would happen is that we might get reported to the IRS.

I am so glad he is okay, Nancy!

What are you going to do with the dime when you find it?
